The Acting Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Smith Danquah Buttey, has disclosed that the party has placed a ban on all its executives and sitting Members of Parliament from openly endorsing or campaigning for any of the presidential aspirants ahead of the party’s presidential primaries.

Speaking on Pure FM with Kwame Adinkrah on Tuesday, October 22, 2026, Chairman Buttey revealed that the decision followed a meeting between the party’s former leader, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and the five presidential hopefuls seeking to lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections.

According to him, the directive is intended to ensure a level playing field for all aspirants and to prevent internal divisions as the party prepares for its much-anticipated presidential primaries, scheduled for January 31, 2026.

“NPP Executives and sitting MPs have been banned from openly campaigning for any presidential aspirant ahead of the primaries,” Buttey stated, emphasizing that the directive was one of the key outcomes of the former President’s engagement with the aspirants.

Mr. Buttey further noted that the former President used the opportunity to appeal to the aspirants to conduct themselves responsibly and in a manner that reflects the values and unity of the party.

“Former President Akufo-Addo called on the party’s presidential aspirants to comport themselves ahead of the January 31, 2026 primaries,” he said.

The Acting Chairman underscored that maintaining peace, discipline, and unity during the campaign period is crucial to ensuring the NPP presents a united front after the primaries. He urged all party members to adhere strictly to the directive and focus on strengthening the party’s base ahead of the 2028 elections.

The NPP’s presidential primaries will determine who lead party into the 2028 elections. With five aspirants currently in the race, the party’s primaries have been slated for January 31, 2026.
