In a phone interview with Pure FM, Mr. Randy Wilson, Head of the Transport Department at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), expressed concern over the artificial increase in transport fares by some drivers in Kumasi.
Mr. Wilson revealed that the KMA has arrested 30 drivers for overcharging passengers, as part of the Assembly’s efforts to enforce fair transport practices and ensure compliance with approved fare guidelines.
The operation, carried out at key transport terminals and major routes across the city, demonstrates KMA’s commitment to protecting commuters from exploitation. Mr. Wilson emphasized that the arrests serve as a strong warning to other drivers who might engage in similar misconduct.
He further disclosed that the arrested drivers will face legal proceedings, which may result in fines, temporary license suspensions, or other penalties. Mr. Wilson urged all commercial drivers to strictly comply with fare regulations to maintain order and fairness in the city’s public transport system.
This enforcement initiative seeks to safeguard commuters from financial exploitation, enhance public confidence in Kumasi’s transport network, and highlight KMA’s proactive approach to accountability and transparency within the transport sector.
