The North East Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Sulley Sambian, has officially declared his intention to contest the party’s Regional Chairmanship, presenting himself as the experienced and capable leader needed to reposition the party ahead of the crucial 2028 general elections.
The private legal practitioner announced his decision to the media, emphasizing his track record, leadership experience, and commitment to strengthening the party’s fortunes in the North East Region.
A Tested and Proven Leader
Describing himself as a “tested and proven” party strategist, Lawyer Sambian argued that the NPP requires strong and effective leadership to reclaim lost ground and secure victory in 2028, particularly in the home region of the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
“The NPP cannot afford to fail Ghanaians in the 2028 polls, much less in the home region of our flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. We need leadership with the competence, experience, and ability to mobilize resources and unite our ranks. I have been tested and proven in various capacities within the party, and I am ready to deliver,” he stated.
According to him, the task ahead demands more than slogans and promises. He believes the North East Region must become a dominant stronghold for the NPP and a key pillar in Dr. Bawumia’s quest for the presidency.
Strong Record Within the Party
Lawyer Sambian enters the contest with a strong record of support within the party’s rank and file. During the NPP’s Regional Conference held in Nalerigu on May 27, 2022, he was overwhelmingly retained as Regional Secretary after securing 106 out of 146 valid votes — the highest vote tally recorded by any candidate in the regional elections.
His impressive performance is being cited by supporters as evidence of the confidence party delegates have in his leadership abilities and organizational skills.
A Defining Contest for the Party
Sambian is expected to challenge incumbent Regional Chairman Nurudeen, who won the chairmanship position in 2022 with 71 out of 146 valid votes, defeating his closest challenger by 21 votes.
With the 2028 elections on the horizon, political observers view the upcoming regional contest as one of the most significant internal elections in the region. While the incumbent will seek another mandate based on his record, Lawyer Sambian is offering delegates a vision centered on renewed energy, strategic leadership, grassroots mobilization, and electoral success.
The NPP’s National Executive Committee has scheduled regional elections across the country for August 8–9, 2026.
For many party faithful in the North East Region, the contest will ultimately be a choice between maintaining the status quo and entrusting the party’s future to a leader who has consistently demonstrated his ability to win support, build consensus, and deliver results.
