Ghana, European Union deepen security cooperation with new defence support plans

Ghana and the European Union (EU) have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral security cooperation as both sides seek to address evolving security threats and strengthen the country’s defence capabilities.

The renewed commitment was made during a high-level meeting held at the Ministry of Defence in Accra, where the Deputy Minister for Defence, Hon. Ernest Brogya Genfi, received the European Union Ambassador to Ghana, HE Rune Skinnebech, alongside the Head of Division for the European Peace Facility (EPF), Ms. Dorota Dlouchy Suliga, and Policy Officer Maria Castaldi.

Discussions focused on enhancing collaboration to tackle emerging security challenges, improve Ghana’s defence preparedness, and promote regional peace and stability.

Hon. Brogya Genfi highlighted the changing nature of security threats confronting Ghana and the wider West African sub-region, stressing the government’s efforts to strengthen the operational capacity of the Ghana Armed Forces, particularly the Ghana Navy.

He noted that government is prioritising counter-terrorism initiatives and the deployment of operational platforms to safeguard critical national infrastructure and other strategic assets. The Deputy Minister also expressed gratitude to the European Union for its continued support to Ghana’s defence sector.

Speaking on behalf of the European Union, Ms. Dorota Dlouchy Suliga reaffirmed the bloc’s commitment to partnering Ghana in addressing shared security concerns through mutual cooperation and respect.

She disclosed that the European Union intends to provide funding through the European Peace Facility in the coming year to support the enhancement of Ghana’s defence capabilities.

According to her, the planned support underscores the EU’s commitment to promoting peace, security, and stability in Ghana and across the West African region.

The meeting further reinforced the long-standing partnership between Ghana and the European Union and highlighted the importance of international cooperation in responding to emerging security threats and strengthening regional resilience.
