The Ministry of Defence will host its maiden Annual Public Lecture on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, in honour of the late Hon. Dr (Med) Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, former Minister for Defence, whose distinguished service to Ghana and unwavering commitment to national security continue to inspire the nation.
According to the Deputy Defence Minister, Hon. Ernest Brogya Genfi, the lecture forms part of efforts by the Ministry to preserve and celebrate the legacy of Dr Omane Boamah, who served as Defence Minister and contributed to ongoing conversations on strengthening Ghana’s defence and security architecture.
Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang will attend the event as the Special Guest of Honour, alongside an esteemed panel of speakers drawn from the security, academic and public service communities.
The maiden lecture is expected to provide a platform for critical discussions on national security, strategic leadership and the future of Ghana’s defence sector, while reflecting on the values and principles that defined Dr Omane Boamah’s public service career.
Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, a medical doctor, politician and former government communicator, was appointed Minister for Defence in January 2025 by President John Dramani Mahama. He previously served as Minister for Communications and played a key role in government communication and policy implementation during the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
His tenure at the Defence Ministry was tragically cut short following the military helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, which claimed his life and that of seven others, including then Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.
The late Defence Minister was widely recognised for his dedication to public service, having held several significant positions in government and political leadership. Beyond his ministerial responsibilities, he was noted for his advocacy for effective governance, institutional development and national progress.
“The annual lecture series is intended to immortalise Dr. Omane Boamah’s contributions while encouraging intellectual engagement on issues critical to Ghana’s defence and security interests.” Deputy Defence Minister, Ernest Brogya Genfi remarked in a media interaction ahead of the public lecture.
