Ghana’s Speaker Bagbin Loses Bid to Reverse Supreme Court Ruling

The Supreme Court of Ghana has dismissed Speaker Alban Bagbin’s application to reverse a previous ruling blocking his declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant. Bagbin sought to nullify the court’s decision and set aside a writ filed by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

Represented by Thaddeus Sory, Bagbin argued the court overreached by suspending his ruling, which he claimed was a parliamentary decision outside judicial remit. He emphasized the Speaker’s actions, as head of an independent arm of government, are distinct from judicial decisions.

However, the Chief Justice ruled that the court must address the dispute promptly to prevent irreparable harm to constituencies. She expedited proceedings, requiring parties to submit claims within seven days
