It’s Bawumia vs Kennedy Whether We Like It or Not” — Rev. Justice Bofa

By Adwoa Nyarko Asiamah | 22 January 2026

Rev. Justice Bofa, a lecturer at the Christian Service University, has called for internal reforms within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), arguing that unity and strategic leadership selection are crucial if the party is to return to power.

Speaking in an interview on Pure FM, Rev. Bofa suggested a leadership arrangement where the winner of the party’s flagbearer contest becomes the presidential candidate, while the runner-up automatically becomes the running mate. According to him, such a system would help heal divisions after internal contests and present a united front to the electorate.

He stated that the current NPP flagbearer race has effectively narrowed to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong, noting that “whether we like it or not, the contest is between Bawumia and Kennedy.”

Rev. Bofa questioned why, as seen in previous elections, party leaders often fail to come together after internal primaries to jointly lead the party, stressing that collaboration between leading contenders could significantly improve the NPP’s chances of winning power.

He further argued that it is not just the party but Ghanaians in general who often display what he described as “strategic hypocrisy” in choosing leaders. According to him, every political moment reveals the type of leader the people truly want, not necessarily the one they claim to want publicly. He expressed concern about the tone of the ongoing internal campaigns, describing them as unappealing and counterproductive to party unity.

Sharing his assessment of the race, Rev. Bofa said he has closely followed all the internal campaigns and believes the contest could go into a run-off.

He recalled that Kennedy Agyapong entered the previous contest late but still caused a major upset, and noted that this time, having started early, Kennedy appears more aggressive and better positioned than before.

However, Rev. Bofa maintained that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia remains a strong contender, acknowledging that victory will not come easily but insisting that Bawumia still has a clear path to winning.

“It will not be on a silver platter for Bawumia, but Bawumia can win,” he stated.

Rev. Bofa concluded by emphasising that internal unity, reforms, and strategic cooperation among party leaders are essential if the NPP is to present a credible alternative and successfully regain power.
