Embattled New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has reportedly disclosed an alleged plot by five inmates to poison him while he remains in custody at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.
The revelation was made public by his aide, Dr. Palgrave Boakye Danquah, who recounted the alleged incident during an interview with Elton Brobbey on JoyNews’ Pulse programme.
According to Dr. Boakye Danquah, Chairman Wontumi personally informed him about the alleged plot during a private conversation when they met at court earlier in the day.
He further claimed that prison officers had moved the five inmates to a different cell, away from where the NPP figure was being held, following the reported incident.
“Chairman Wontumi told me this when we had a conversation n court today,” Dr. Boakye Danquah said, explaining how he came by the information.
The aide did not provide further details about the alleged poisoning attempt, including the substance reportedly involved or the circumstances under which the alleged plot was uncovered.
The claims have not been independently verified, and it remains unclear whether the Ghana Prisons Service has formally investigated the matter or confirmed the reported relocation of the inmates.
Chairman Wontumi remains in custody following his conviction in an illegal mining case involving operations on a concession at Samreboi in the Western Region. He was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment with hard labour and is challenging the conviction and sentence while seeking bail pending appeal.
The Accra High Court is expected to rule on his bail application on November 4, 2026.
He was in Court today in a different matter where the State is pursuing him for money laundering, defrauding by false pretenses and a host of other charges in a case titled The Republic versus Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), Thomas Antwi-Boasiako, and Wontumi Farms Limited.
