The Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Yaw Brogya Genfi, has clarified that the aircraft involved in the fatal crash reported at Tema Community 1 on Monday afternoon does not belong to the Ghana Armed Forces.
In a brief statement issued on his Facebook page on Monday, following the incident, the Deputy Minister said preliminary reports indicate that the aircraft involved was a privately owned microlight and not a military helicopter as earlier speculated in some circulating reports.
“We have received reports of a fatal crash involving a privately owned microlight aircraft at Tema Community 1 this afternoon. We wish to clarify that the aircraft is not owned by the Ghana Armed Forces,” he stated.
The clarification comes amid widespread reports and social media claims suggesting that a helicopter belonging to the Ghana Armed Forces had crashed in the Tema area earlier in the day.
The Deputy Minister expressed sympathy to the families affected by the tragedy, extending condolences on behalf of the Defence Ministry and the military high command.
“We pray for the souls of the departed and extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families,” the statement added.
Earlier reports from the scene indicated that the aircraft crashed within the vicinity of Tema Community 1, drawing the attention of residents and emergency responders.
Authorities are expected to conduct further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The incident has revived memories of past aviation tragedies involving military aircraft in Ghana, including the fatal crash of a Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9 helicopter in August 2025 which resulted in the death of all eight people on board, including senior government officials and the Atiwa Forest crash which occurred on March 16, 2002 – It included 4 military crew members, 2 patients and a nurse from 37 Military hospital.
