The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has demanded the immediate release of its leading communicator, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, following his arrest by officers of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) at the Kotoka International Airport on Saturday.
The arrest which has sparked widespread commentary on social media is said to have occurred after Mr. Aboagye publicly declared his intention to contest for the position of National Communications Director of the NPP in the party’s upcoming national executive elections.
In a strongly worded statement, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong alleged that Mr. Aboagye was arrested with the assistance of immigration officers before being taken into EOCO custody.
According to the party, Lawyers representing Mr. Aboagye were subsequently denied access to him, while his whereabouts remained undisclosed and no formal charges had been communicated at the time of the statement.
Describing the development as an attempt to intimidate political opponents, the NPP rejected suggestions that the arrest was part of a routine law enforcement process.
“Let us be clear about what this is. It is not law enforcement. It is intimidation,” Mr. Kodua Frimpong stated.
The party noted that Mr. Aboagye has become one of the most vocal critics of the Mahama administration, frequently challenging the government on issues including illegal mining, governance, accountability and economic management. The NPP further argued that the timing of the arrest coming on the same day he announced his candidacy for the National Communications Director position raises serious questions about the motive behind the action.
The party is demanding that EOCO either release Mr. Aboagye immediately or formally charge him and present him before a court of competent jurisdiction in accordance with the provisions of the 1992 Constitution.
The NPP is also insisting that he be granted immediate and unrestricted access to his lawyers and family members, stressing that the constitutional rights of every detained person must be respected.
Citing Article 14 of the Constitution, the party maintained that no Ghanaian should be held incommunicado or denied legal representation while in state custody.
The statement further accused the government of what it described as a growing pattern of politically motivated arrests, invitations and detentions targeted at opposition figures and members of the NPP.
“We say to EOCO and to those directing it: institutions of state are not private weapons. Ghanaians are watching, and Ghana’s institutions will outlive this government,” the statement added.
While condemning the arrest, Mr. Kodua Frimpong urged party supporters to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding, insisting that intimidation would not silence the NPP or deter its members from participating in the democratic process.
Mr. Aboagye, a prominent member of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s communication team, has over the years established himself as one of the NPP’s most visible media personalities. Prior to his arrest, he had formally launched his campaign for the position of National Communications Director, pledging to strengthen the party’s communication machinery and sharpen its public engagement strategy.
As of the time of filing this report, the exact basis for Mr. Aboagye’s detention remained unclear, with no formal charges announced by the authorities.
