The Member of Parliament for Akuapem North and former Chief Executive Officer of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Sammi Awuku, has raised concerns over what he describes as an emerging pattern of suppression, harassment and intimidation targeting opposition communicators in Ghana.
Mr. Awuku’s comments follow the detention of Dennis Miracles Aboagye by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), a development that occurred barely hours after the former Director of Communications at the office of the Vice President declared his intention to contest for the position of National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The arrest of Mr. Aboagye has generated political conversations, with some members of the opposition questioning the timing of the development and demanding clarity from authorities on the basis for his detention.
In a statement reacting to the development, Sammi Awuku expressed concern over what he described as a worrying trend of opposition voices being targeted whenever they hold the government accountable.
“It is becoming increasingly alarming to see opposition communicators suppressed, harassed and intimidated whenever they hold the government accountable,” Mr. Awuku stated.
He argued that from party communicators to social media activists and online commentators, recent developments appear to suggest a pattern that requires serious attention.
According to him, the role of an opposition party in a democracy is to provide effective scrutiny of government policies and actions, and such responsibility must not be interpreted as an attempt to undermine the state.
“The opposition exists to provide frank, fearless and effective scrutiny of government, not to be silenced for doing so,” he added.
Mr. Awuku further maintained that if Dennis Miracles Aboagye has breached any law, the appropriate procedure should be followed by making the charges known and allowing the matter to be determined through due process.
“If Miracles has broken the law, let the charges be made known and let the courts decide. If not, he should be released,” he said.
The Akuapem North legislator cautioned against actions that could weaken public confidence in state institutions, stressing that while governments may change, the judgment of history remains permanent.
“Governments come and go, but posterity remains and it never forgets,” he concluded.
Dennis Miracles Aboagye has been a prominent voice for the NPP, particularly in defending the record of the previous Akufo-Addo administration and criticizing policies of the current government. His recent decision to contest the party’s National Communications Director position had intensified interest in his political future before news of his detention emerged.
As of publication, EOCO had not publicly disclosed the specific details surrounding Mr. Aboagye’s detention.
