Work on the second phase of the Suame Interchange Project in Kumasi has reached 87 percent completion, with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) projecting that the phase will be opened to traffic by October 2026.
The progress update comes as authorities prepare to commence enabling works for Phase One of the project, which will include the construction of the much-anticipated three-tier interchange at Suame.
In a press release dated August 25, 2026, the KMA said Phase Two was “progressing steadily” and was expected to significantly ease congestion within the project corridor once completed.
The ongoing phase covers several major road infrastructure works. The overpasses at Anomangye Junction and Magazine New Road Junction have been completed, while work on the Abusuakruwa Junction overpass is 98.25 percent complete.
The Assembly also reported that the widening of the Offinso Road (N10) into a 2×3-lane dual carriageway is 77 percent complete.
Another key component is the construction of 15 kilometres of local roads, of which 13.2 kilometres have already been completed.
The KMA says the completion and opening of Phase Two will “significantly improve traffic flow within the project corridor” and facilitate the commencement of intensive works under Phase One.
Phase One will involve the construction of the three-tier interchange at Suame, two overpasses at Abrepo and Kofrom Junctions, as well as the widening of the Eastern and Western Bypass roads.
However, the transition to the next phase will require the temporary relocation of some traders and garage operators operating within sections of the project area.
The KMA explained that preliminary activities will have to be undertaken around the Abrepo section, while carriage operators along the WESCO section will also have to relocate to make way for the works.
The enabling works will include the relocation of Ghana Water Company Limited pipeline infrastructure and Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) lines, alongside preparations for traffic management along the Suame Interchange corridor.
Traders given September 7 deadline
The development was discussed during an engagement led by the Kumasi Mayor, Hon. Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, together with technical officers of the KMA, representatives of the consultant, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Department of Urban Roads, the Project Coordinator, representatives of the contractor, Rango Construction Limited, and affected traders and other stakeholders.
Following the engagement, traders and garage operators located along the Abrepo and WESCO sections have been directed to relocate on or before September 7, 2026, to allow the enabling works to begin.
The KMA has asked affected traders to relocate to the Race Course Market, while garage operators have been encouraged to contact the Works Engineer at the Race Course Market for assistance in identifying alternative locations.
The Assembly has appealed to all affected persons to cooperate with the relocation process, stressing that “the cooperation of all stakeholders is essential” to ensure the timely commencement and successful implementation of the project.
The KMA says the completed project is expected to bring significant improvements to traffic movement and transportation within the Kumasi Metropolis.
The Assembly has therefore urged affected traders, garage operators and the general public to take the relocation directive seriously as preparations intensify for the next stage of the Suame Interchange Project.
