Brogya Genfi bids farewell to Defence Ministry, takes up new role at Presidency

Former Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, has officially taken leave of the Ministry of Defence following a send-off ceremony held in his honour in Accra.
In a short ceremony at the Ministry of Defence on Friday, September 2026, Mr. Genfi was honored for his impactful leadership especially during the difficult moments in the affairs of the Ministry which saw the passing of the then sector Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah.
In a reaction, Hon. Genfi said the ceremony provided an opportunity to reflect on what he described as the “monumental achievements” recorded during his tenure and to express his appreciation to the leadership and staff of the Ministry and the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
He specifically acknowledged the Minister for Defence, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, the Chief Director and management of the Ministry, the Service Chiefs and the Chief of Staff at General Headquarters for their support and professionalism during his time in office.
The Ghana Armed Forces in confirming the send-off ceremony described it as an event to recognise Mr Genfi’s dedicated service and contributions to the Ministry and the Armed Forces.
Defence Minister Kenneth Gilbert Adjei on his part commended Mr Genfi for his role in advancing the Ministry’s agenda and contributing to the development of Ghana’s defence sector. He also praised his commitment, counsel and support, particularly during challenging periods, and wished him success in his new assignment.
As part of the ceremony, the Ministry of Defence and the GAF presented Mr Genfi with citations, while the Chief of the Defence Staff presented him with a ceremonial sword in recognition of his service.
Mr Genfi said he was particularly touched by the token presented to him, describing it as a symbol of appreciation for the work accomplished collectively during his tenure.
His departure from the Defence Ministry follows President John Dramani Mahama’s latest changes to his government announced on August 26, 2026. Under the changes, Mr Genfi was reassigned from his position as Deputy Minister for Defence to serve as Presidential Adviser on National Resilience and Emergency Preparedness, with the reassignment taking immediate effect.
Mr Genfi had served as Deputy Minister for Defence since March 2025. During his tenure, he was involved in several initiatives concerning the modernisation, welfare and operational readiness of the Ghana Armed Forces.
In November 2025, he reaffirmed government’s commitment to retooling and modernising the Armed Forces, including improving military communications, technology, accommodation, training infrastructure and healthcare systems. The announcement was made during the GAF’s Land Combat Firepower Demonstration at Bundase.
He also played a role in efforts to address the accommodation challenges facing military personnel and ensuring the success of clearing of the right of way passage for the construction of the Government’s flagship Accra-Kumasi expressway infrastructure project.
Also, in May 2026, he inaugurated a 17-member committee tasked with developing a comprehensive and sustainable Home Ownership Policy and Scheme for GAF personnel.
Two months later, in July 2026, Mr Genfi broke ground for three redevelopment projects at Burma Camp aimed at replacing ageing infrastructure with modern housing and office facilities for military personnel and their families. The project followed a fundraising campaign held in April.
His tenure also saw him engage extensively on Ghana’s broader security architecture. In April 2025, he called for a multilateral approach to emerging security threats, particularly terrorism and other complex challenges confronting countries across Africa, stressing that no country could successfully tackle such threats alone.
At Friday’s farewell ceremony, Mr Genfi expressed gratitude to President Mahama for the confidence reposed in him and the opportunity to serve as Deputy Minister for Defence. He also acknowledged the guidance and support of the Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs and senior military officers.
“As I move into my new responsibilities, I carry with me the lessons, discipline, and camaraderie of the MoD and the GAF,” he said.
His new assignment places him in an area closely connected to his previous portfolio, particularly as Ghana continues to strengthen its preparedness for emerging security, disaster and national resilience challenges.
