The Flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has appointed the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Lawyer Vincent Ekow Assafuah, as Co-Chair of the party’s Youth Development Policy Committee as part of preparations toward the 2028 general elections.
The appointment places the youthful legislator at the center of the NPP’s policy development efforts, particularly in shaping strategies aimed at addressing the needs and aspirations of Ghana’s youth.
Lawyer Assafuah, who currently serves as the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Youth and Sports Committee, assumes the role with considerable experience in youth advocacy, sports development, and public policy formulation. He previously played a significant role in shaping the party’s policy direction on youth empowerment, job creation, and sports development during past election cycles.
On the floor of Parliament, the Old Tafo MP has consistently championed issues affecting young people and has called for reforms in Ghana’s sports and youth development strategies.
Among his notable parliamentary interventions are calls for government to prioritize the completion and effective utilization of existing sports infrastructure before embarking on new projects, as captured in the Parliamentary Hansard of March 16, 2026. He also tabled key proposals on the establishment and management of Ghana’s Sports Fund during parliamentary proceedings on March 19, 2026.
Over the years, Lawyer Assafuah has built a reputation as a passionate advocate for youth rights and development, earning him the informal title of “Youth President” among sections of Ghanaian youth.
He recently made headlines after urging government to direct the Independent Examination Council (IEC) to withdraw its directive requiring prospective students seeking admission to the Ghana School of Law to sit for entrance examinations this year.
His position was based on assurances previously given by government officials that the proposed Legal Education Bill would be passed and assented to in time to eliminate the entrance examination requirement, thereby making preparations for such examinations unnecessary.
Lawyer Assafuah has in the past served as Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development and also built a strong reputation as a communications strategist.
Political observers view his latest appointment as recognition of his hard work, leadership qualities, and longstanding commitment to advancing youth-focused policies.
He joins a high-profile team tasked with developing the NPP’s 2028 manifesto, including Hon. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong as Co-Chair of the Employment and Jobs Policy Committee, Dr. Bryan Acheampong as Co-Chair of the Defence and Interior Policy Committee, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum as Co-Chair of the Education Policy Committee, Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong as Co-Chair of the Housing and Urban Development Policy Committee, and Kojo Oppong Nkrumah as Secretary to the Committee.
The committee is expected to craft a comprehensive and forward-looking policy blueprint aimed at addressing the pressing needs of Ghanaians and positioning the NPP strongly ahead of the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections.
