Kennedy Agyapong, a contender for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position has promised to revise the 1992 Constitution of Ghana to ensure a stricter separation of powers under his leadership as President of Ghana.
Hon. Agyapong made this known in a meeting with Lecturers of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), on Monday, September 18, 2023, in Kumasi.
Hon. Agyapong in responding to a question posed by an attendee lecturer on a possible amendment of the constitution stated that, he will as a matter of priority ensure that Members of Parliaments (MPs) remain solely as Legislators and do not constitute the executive arm of government.
“This has been something I am committed to and I know my colleagues now will not support it but under my presidency, I will ensure and facilitate a strict separation of powers.
I know from the onset, members of parliament may shoot it down but even if it means that I have to conduct a referendum on this matter, I will do so.
MPs must remain as MPs and not be part of the Executives. It is one of the key things I will be doing to amend the constitution of Ghana. There will be changes and amendments in the constitution.” Hon. Kennedy Agyapong noted.
