Ghana’s PassionAir Reduces Airfares Following Cedi Appreciation

In a welcome move for local travelers, PassionAir has announced a 10% reduction in airfares on all its domestic routes, effective Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

The fare cut follows the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against major global currencies—a development that has eased operational costs for local airlines. PassionAir is the first carrier to respond to calls from government officials to reflect this shift in the economy through more affordable pricing.

Speaking at a stakeholder engagement hosted by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority on June 11, Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe encouraged domestic airlines to adjust their fares in line with the stronger cedi. PassionAir’s latest announcement appears to be a direct response to that call, possibly setting the tone for similar pricing reviews by other domestic carriers.

“We’re committed to ensuring our customers directly benefit from favorable market trends,” PassionAir said in a Facebook post. “The strengthening of the cedi has allowed us to pass on savings while continuing to deliver safe, comfortable, and reliable service.”

The airline emphasized that it remains focused on affordability without compromising service standards. The fare reduction could mark a broader shift in Ghana’s domestic aviation sector, with increased pressure on airlines to remain competitive and responsive to economic conditions.
