Martyrs’ Day: Courts to See No Lawyer Appearances on June 30

Members of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) will not be appearing in court on Monday, June 30, 2025, following formal approval from the Acting Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie.

In a circular dated Tuesday, June 17, 2025, addressed to all judges and magistrates nationwide, the Acting Chief Justice gave the green light for lawyers to refrain from court activities in observance of this year’s Martyrs’ Day. This decision follows an established tradition that permits legal professionals to fully participate in the annual commemoration.

“In line with custom, approval has been granted for members of the Ghana Bar Association to withdraw their services from court appearances on Monday, 30th June 2025,” the notice stated.

Martyrs’ Day is a solemn national event held to honour the memory of three High Court judges—Justices Fred Poku Sarkodee, Cecilia Koranteng-Addow, and Kwadwo Agyei Agyapong—and a retired army officer, Major Sam Acquah. These individuals were abducted and brutally murdered on June 30, 1982, during one of the darkest periods in Ghana’s political history.

This annual remembrance serves as a moment of reflection on the sacrifices made in the pursuit of justice and the rule of law.
