NPP Primaries: Barekese Delegates demand cash top-up before voting

Some delegates at Barekese participating in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries have reportedly demanded monetary payments and additional “top-ups” from aspirants before agreeing to cast their ballots.

Delegates who spoke to Angel FM and Pure FM’s ‘Ballot Watch’ reporter, Nana Osei Tutu on condition of anonymity alleged that one of the aspirants, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, distributed GH¢700 each to over 800 delegates. According to them, they are yet to receive money from other aspirants and will not vote until those payments are made.

The delegates stated that the total amount received would influence where and for whom they would cast their votes.

They further alleged that the constituency chairman was harboring monies intended for delegates. These claims could not be independently verified at the time of filing this report.

One female delegate, who also requested anonymity, said another aspirant, Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, had appealed to the delegates, explaining that he did not have money to distribute.

Reacting to the development on the joint Pure FM and Angel FM’s Ballot Watch programme, the Constituency Secretary of Atwima Nwabiagya North, Mr. Raphael Osei Owusu acknowledged that the party itself had not induced any delegate to participate in the elections. He explained that, according to reports available to him, coordinators of the various aspirants on the ground had identified certain individuals who had already made up their minds to vote against their candidates and, for that reason, had decided not to give money to such individuals.

As of the time of reporting, no official response had been issued by the aspirants mentioned regarding the allegations.
