A final-year student of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has credited former Vice Dean of Students, Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah, with playing a pivotal role in his academic success after receiving support at the beginning of his studies.
Alhassan, a Political Studies major, recently called on Prof. Addai-Mensah to express his gratitude for the intervention that enabled him to continue his education. His visit prompted the former Vice Dean to reflect on Alhassan’s progress and to renew his personal commitment to supporting underprivileged students.
In 2021, Alhassan arrived at KNUST without funding and personal belongings. His situation was brought to the attention of Prof. Addai-Mensah, who at the time served as Vice Dean of Students. Prof. Addai-Mensah personally provided him with money to purchase clothing and extended further financial support during his studies.
To supplement this assistance, Alhassan engaged in petty trading, selling gas regulators at Circle in Accra to raise money for his fees. Now in his final year, he has maintained a Cumulative Weighted Average (CWA) of 75.19 as of the first semester.
Commenting on the development, Prof. Addai-Mensah said:
“This is one of the stories that encourage me deeply. I pray God blesses me with more resources so I can continue to support students who find themselves in such difficult circumstances. Sometimes, a small act of kindness can change an entire life.”
Prof. Addai-Mensah, who later became Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, is widely admired for his compassion and generosity. At KNUST, he is particularly remembered for his continuous personal interventions to support underprivileged students with fees, clothing, and other essentials.
Alhassan’s success story, marked by resilience, hard work, and gratitude, underscores the enduring impact of Prof. Addai-Mensah’s kindness, a reminder of how the right support at the right moment can change lives.
