SSNIT highlights 60 years of strength and sustainability at media engagement forum

By: Evans Osei-Bonsu- The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has reaffirmed the strength and sustainability of its pension scheme, assuring contributors and pensioners of a robust and transparent system capable of meeting obligations for many years to come.

Speaking at the 2025 Edition of SSNIT Media Connect held in Kumasi as part of the Trust’s 60th Anniversary Celebration, the General Manager in charge of Operations, Mr. Philip Kofi Senyah, disclosed that the scheme’s sustainability level now stands at over 300%, underscoring its financial soundness and prudent management.

According to him, SSNIT currently has over 2 million active members and 257,000 pensioners on its payroll, demonstrating the growing trust Ghanaians have in the national pension scheme. He added that with GH¢24 billion in assets under management, the Trust remains one of the most stable and well-capitalized institutions in the country.

“We have invested in every sector of the economy. SSNIT has ensured it strategizes well, and I can give you 300% assurance that the scheme will continue to run strongly without any problems in the years ahead,” Mr. Senyah stated confidently.

He revealed that SSNIT has made strategic investments across various sectors, including 22 out of the 34 active companies on the Ghana Stock Exchange, reinforcing its role as a major player in Ghana’s economic development.

Mr. Senyah also dismissed recent claims that SSNIT underpays retirees, describing such assertions as unfounded. He explained that pensions are paid strictly based on contributors’ basic salaries during their working life, with higher contributions yielding higher pensions.

He added that SSNIT has instituted a top-up mechanism to cushion pensioners who contributed smaller amounts, ensuring fairness and inclusivity in the pension system.

The one-day SSNIT Media Connect 2025, held at the Golden Bean Hotel in Kumasi on Thursday, October 30, brought together leading journalists from across the country to interact with SSNIT officials and gain deeper insights into the operations and impact of the Trust over the past six decades.

Mr. Senyah called on the media to help promote accurate reporting on pension issues and to educate the public about the importance of regular contributions. He also urged active workers to take a personal interest in understanding how the pension system works to secure their financial future.

“SSNIT remains Ghana’s most reliable and sustainable pension scheme. With continued support from all stakeholders, we will keep protecting workers, caring for pensioners, and ensuring a secure retirement for all,” he assured.

Since its establishment in 1965, SSNIT has served as the cornerstone of Ghana’s social protection system. As the Trust marks 60 years of dedicated service, it continues to demonstrate financial strength, transparency, and innovation, reinforcing its role in safeguarding the future of millions of Ghanaian workers and pensioners.
