The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has begun moves to mend its fractured relationship with former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, with former Majority Leader and newly appointed Chief of Staff to the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Osei-Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, revealing that reconciliation efforts are already underway.
Speaking on the state of affairs within the opposition party, the veteran politician disclosed that “the leadership of the NPP are taking steps to re-engage Hon. Ken Agyapong,” signalling what many observers see as a concerted effort to heal divisions that have persisted since the party’s presidential primaries last year.
His comments come at a time when concerns over growing cracks within the party have intensified following a series of public criticisms by Hon. Agyapong, who has not hidden his disappointment with some leading figures in the party.
One of the most public manifestations of the strained relationship was Hon. Agyapong’s declaration last weekend on his private Net 2 TV that he would not mount the same campaign platform with Hon. Osei-Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo and a host of other stalwarts in the party to campaign.
The former Assin Central MP and flagbearer hopeful, accused the likes of the then Majority Leader of working against his presidential ambitions during the NPP flagbearership contest, allegations which Hon. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu denied.
The disagreement fueled speculation about a widening gulf between Hon. Agyapong and the party.
Those concerns were amplified recently when Mr. Agyapong, in a strongly-worded interview, suggested he was in possession of information capable of costing the NPP victory in the 2028 elections. In what appeared to be a warning shot to the party hierarchy, the businessman-politician vowed to “spill the beans” in June next year, insisting that Ghanaians should remain in an expectant mood and stressing that he would strictly adhere to the timeline he had set for himself.
He further accused elements within the previous administration of profiteering from the Agenda 111 programme, alleging that contracts under the flagship health initiative were sold to cronies for a ten percent cut. According to him, the alleged practice deprived the party of the financial and moral capacity to complete the hospital projects and weakened its authority to demand accountability from the John Dramani Mahama administration over inherited projects, including the stalled Afari Military Hospital.
Speaking on the need for reconciliation with Dr. Kwame Adinkrah on Kumasi-based Pure FM, Hon. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stressed that internal contests and electoral defeats often leave behind grievances, but noted that dialogue and unity remain indispensable if the party is to reposition itself after its 2024 defeat.
“The leadership of NPP are taking steps to re-engage Hon Ken Agyapong,” the former Suame MP reiterated, expressing confidence that despite the disagreements and frustrations that followed the party’s electoral defeat, Hon. Agyapong remains an integral part of the NPP family.
