Volta Lake Set to Power Ghana’s Industrial Revival – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to transform the Volta Lake into a central development corridor, positioning it as the flagship project under his newly launched 24-Hour Economy Policy.

Speaking at the launch event in Accra, Mahama said the Volta Economic Corridor will breathe life into Ghana’s agricultural, industrial, and transport sectors. He explained that this move is part of a broader effort to restore the full vision of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who saw the lake not only as a source of power but as a driver of economic transformation.

“Our goal is to unlock the untapped potential of the Volta Lake and its surroundings for farming, industry, tourism, and nationwide transport,” Mahama stated.

The initiative will feature:

•Irrigation of over 2 million hectares of land for year-round farming (Grow 24)

•Establishment of agro-industrial parks focusing on processing and manufacturing (Make 24)

•Development of tourism and cultural hubs along the lake (Show 24)

•Use of the lake as a strategic transport link between Ghana’s regions (Connect 24)

Mahama described the corridor as a key pillar in his 24-hour economy vision—creating jobs, improving trade routes, and driving inclusive national growth.

“We are not just reviving Nkrumah’s dream,” he said. “We’re upgrading it for today’s Ghana.”
