The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has received commendation for what is being described as a bold and inclusive step toward mainstreaming persons with disability (PWDs) into the country’s political framework.
Ntim Twumasi Kwaku (NTK), a former Second Vice Chairman of the Ejisu Constituency and an NPP Communicator, has applauded the party’s leadership and research committees for formally adopting the position of PWD Coordinator within the party’s national structure. The announcement followed the NPP’s recently held National Delegates Conference, where the position was formally ratified.
In a statement issued by NTK, who is himself a person with disability, he described the move as a “great sign of acceptance” of the long-held advocacy phrase “disability is not inability”. He noted that the inclusion of this role within the party structure reinforces the longstanding call by PWDs across Ghana for greater inclusiveness and representation in every facet of national development.
“PWDs are not only marginalised in employment but across virtually every sector of our society. This decision by the NPP sends a strong message of empowerment and inclusivity,” NTK said.
He further noted that the creation of the PWD Coordinator position ensures that persons with disability can now participate meaningfully in party decision-making — from the constituency level to the highest echelons of the party hierarchy.
Describing the NPP as a “pacesetter in innovative social intervention policies”, NTK urged other political parties, as well as public and corporate institutions, to emulate the example set by the governing party. He stressed that the NPP continues to demonstrate its commitment to ensuring that PWDs live dignified and respectable lives, not as objects of charity but as active contributors to national progress.
While commending the party, NTK also appealed to its leadership to allocate adequate resources to the newly created PWD Coordinator positions to ensure effective and efficient delivery of their mandate.
“The elephant remains a winning symbol,” he added, “and we will do everything within our power to help save Ghana.”
The NPP’s move comes amid growing public discourse on the rights and inclusion of persons with disability in governance, education, health, and economic policy, and is expected to resonate positively with disability advocacy groups across the country.
