GIMPA Law Students undertake study tour of World Trade Organization
Students of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) Law School’s LL.M. in International Trade and Business Law programme have undertaken a study tour of the World Trade Organization (WTO) as part of their postgraduate academic programme.
The students, accompanied by faculty members, visited the WTO to gain first-hand exposure to the operations of the multilateral trading system and deepen their understanding of international trade law, policy, negotiations and global economic governance.
The study tour provided the students with an opportunity to engage with the institution responsible for administering global trade rules and to gain practical insights into how international trade agreements and policies are developed and implemented.
WTO Director-General, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, also highlighted the visit and commended the students for their “interest and enthusiasm” in gaining a deeper understanding of the organisation and the global trading system.
The visit comes at a time when African countries are seeking to strengthen intra-African trade through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which has its Secretariat in Accra, Ghana.
The development of the continental market is expected to increase the demand for professionals with expertise in trade law, policy, negotiations and international business.
GIMPA Law School said the study tour forms part of its efforts to complement classroom-based legal education with practical exposure to institutions involved in shaping international trade rules and policy.
