Skyface and Reggie Reveal Secrets About O’Kenneth and the Origins of Asakaa

Fans of Ghana’s Asakaa drill movement have gained fresh insights into the group’s formation, creative process and the story behind Skyface’s iconic mask following revelations by Skyface and Reggie in a recent interview.
During the interview, the two artistes opened up about the influence of fellow rapper O’Kenneth on the group’s lyrical style, how the members came together, and why Skyface eventually decided to abandon his signature mask.
According to Skyface, O’Kenneth plays a significant role in shaping the group’s lyrical creativity, often bringing a distinct perspective that complements the ideas of the other members.
He explained that O’Kenneth’s choice of words often introduces a unique twist to their lyrics, creating a balance that has become part of the group’s identity. For instance, while the others might settle on the phrase “sun light,” O’Kenneth might suggest “sun rays.” Similarly, where they might use “supernatural,” he could opt for “surreal.”
The revelations also shed light on how the Asakaa collective was formed. Reggie disclosed that he played a major role in bringing the members together, claiming that he was responsible for introducing almost all the boys who eventually became part of the group.
However, one of the most intriguing revelations concerned Skyface’s decision to stop wearing his now-recognisable mask.
The rapper explained that the decision was largely driven by fraudulent activities involving his identity. According to him, some individuals were using his masked image to secure bookings and perform at shows without his knowledge or authorisation.
He also cited the inconvenience the mask caused during international travel, particularly the delays he experienced at airports, as another reason for abandoning it.
Beyond these practical challenges, Skyface shared a humorous account of why he initially adopted the disguise. While his mother knew his identity but did not support his music career, his elder brother was unaware that he was the person behind the mask.
He explained that the disguise helped him keep his musical activities hidden from his brother while he was at university.
The revelations offer fans a glimpse into the personal experiences, relationships and creative dynamics behind one of Ghana’s most recognisable drill movements.
From the wordplay that shapes their music to the connections that brought the members together, Skyface and Reggie’s accounts provide further insight into the story behind Asakaa and the circumstances that helped shape its identity.
