Boakye Agyarko Calls for Values Driven Leadership to Rebuild NPP and Secure Victory

By: Adwoa Nyarko Asiamah

Boakye Agyarko, a National Chairman hopeful of the New Patriotic Party NPP, has made a passionate case for principled leadership, discipline and a return to the party’s core values as the foundation for rebuilding its strength and securing electoral victory.

Speaking on Pure FM, Agyarko reflected on his long association with the party, noting that he has observed and worked closely with every chairman in its history. Witnessing the sacrifices and struggles of past leaders, he said, shaped his conviction that leadership must be anchored in responsibility, restraint and service.

According to him, power is a delicate responsibility that must be properly understood and managed. When misused, it can become destructive. For this reason, anyone entrusted with authority, particularly the national chairman, must exercise caution and lead in a manner that benefits both the party and the nation.

Agyarko emphasized that the NPP’s tradition has always been inclusive, rooted in justice, rule of law and equal opportunity. He recalled the party’s historical struggles dating back to the post 1946 era, when many of its forebears faced imprisonment and persecution. Drawing from personal experience, he shared that his father spent seven years in exile, while he himself lived in exile for 18 years, sacrifices he believes were made in defense of democratic principles.

He expressed concern that the party is gradually drifting from its foundational values. In the past, discipline and respect were instilled in members, and open disrespect was not tolerated or celebrated. Today, he observed, self interest appears to be overtaking service, and emotions in politics are no longer anchored in enduring principles.

Despite these challenges, Agyarko believes it is not too late to reverse course. He underscored the need to properly train and mentor the youth, arguing that many young supporters become disillusioned because the party has failed to consistently pass on its core values. Leadership by example, he stressed, is the starting point for restoring discipline and unity.

He also raised concerns about the growing influence of money in the party’s delegate system, warning that monetization of internal politics could undermine the entire structure. When money becomes the driving force in politics, he cautioned, institutions risk being compromised. He cited the criminal influence associated with Pablo Escobar in Mexico as a warning of how unchecked financial power can infiltrate security and judicial systems, creating dangerous consequences.

Addressing internal challenges, Agyarko pointed to issues of indiscipline and disregard for the party’s constitution as sources of anger and division. As a party that prides itself on the rule of law, he argued, strict adherence to its own constitutional provisions is essential to resolving many of its current problems.

Outlining his vision, Agyarko identified two key priorities, rebuilding the party’s strength and making it more attractive to Ghanaians. Central to this agenda is creating a solid and confident platform capable of delivering victory in the next general election.

He made it clear that his ultimate objective is to help the NPP return to government by ensuring the success of the party’s flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia. In his view, electoral victory requires not only a strong candidate but also a unified and institutionally solid party structure.

Drawing a comparison with the opposition National Democratic Congress NDC, Agyarko suggested that while the NDC has often benefited from a solid party structure despite leadership challenges, the NPP has at times had strong leaders but a weaker party base. For sustainable success, he argued, both elements must be strong.

For Agyarko, the task ahead is clear, restore discipline, reaffirm values, reduce the influence of money, empower the youth and build a formidable party machinery capable of moving the NPP from opposition back into government.
