Assafuah presses Speaker over delayed probe into LGBTQ-related Teacher Manuals

The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Esq., has called on the Speaker of Parliament to ensure action is taken on a motion seeking an investigation into alleged LGBTQ content in teacher manuals distributed across the country.

Raising the matter on the floor of Parliament on Friday, February 6, 2026, the MP recounted that on January 20, 2026, the Minority Leader, the Deputy Minority Leader and himself formally applied to the Speaker for a half-hour motion to probe the issue.

According to him, the motion was intended to investigate “how and why in the teacher manuals that have been given to teachers across the country, it had tendencies of LGBTQ in there.”

He explained that after the application was submitted, the Speaker referred the matter to the Education Committee for consideration.

Hon. Assafuah told the House that the Business Committee had been made aware of the referral, and he expected the matter to be captured in the Business Statement so the committee could proceed with its investigations.

“I am very much aware that the Business Committee’s attention was drawn to this effect and we were expecting that at least it will find expression into the Business Committee statement that the Education Committee will have to investigate into why teacher manuals for basic schools and SHS have LGBTQ tendencies,” he said.

He, however, expressed concern that the issue had not been programmed for discussion, suggesting that the Majority Leader appeared uninterested in bringing the matter before the House.

“So if the Majority Leader will like to comment on that, because per conduct, it looks like the Majority Leader is not interested in bringing this matter to the floor,” he stated.

The Old Tafo legislator further appealed to the Speaker to ensure that parliamentary oversight on the issue is not abandoned.

“The only voice of conscience that is left is the Speaker of Parliament, and I hope that that will not be lost on us,” he added.

In response, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga stated that the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill is a private members’ bill and therefore not government business.

He indicated that it was the responsibility of the bill’s sponsors to engage the Office of the Speaker to resolve any outstanding issues.

“It is not government’s business and certainly not my business as Majority Leader,” he said.
