The Ministry of Education has refuted claims that government’s flagship Free Senior High School (FSHS) program is currently under review, Purefmonline.com reports.
Information making rounds on social media which has been replicated by some main stream media platforms and attributed to the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Prof. Kwasi Opoku Amankwah, says a review of the Free Senior High School Policy is underway.
The report purports that the GES Director claims the exercise is geared at determining which of the cost components government can relinquish to parents to pay.
But in a reaction, the Spokesperson for the Education Ministry, Yaw Opoku Mensah Jnr. speaking in an exclusive interview with Purefmonline.com, has denied the claim.
He says Government has not come to such deliberations neither is the program under review of any sort.
He urged the public to treat the report with the contempt it deserves as the Ministry is keen on ensuring a continuous success of the program.
“For the purpose of clarity, the free SHS policy is not under the purported review or any form of review. The Public should disregard the information making rounds that Government is to decide on how much parents can pay as school fees for their wards in the various SHS. It is not true. The Director General of GES has not made such claims attributed to him.
Parents should be rest assured that the Ministry has the interest of their wards at heart. We are not reviewing the Free SHS.” Opoku Mensah Jnr. reiterated to Purefmonline.com.
As Government seeks for a financial bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Ministry of Finance in a statement earlier this month indicated that the FSHS policy will not be suspended.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum also in an interview on Kumasi-based Pure FM last week stated that the FSHS program will not be affected in any form despite the government’s bailout request from the IMF.
