Galamsey Fight: Akufo-Addo did in 3 months what NDC couldn’t do in 120 days — Miracles Aboagye

Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has taken a swipe at the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing them of recycling old strategies in the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Addressing journalists at the Kwanyako Water Treatment Plant in the Central Region, Mr. Aboagye lamented the devastating impact of galamsey on water bodies, noting that the Ghana Water Company Limited is now unable to properly treat raw water from the Pra River for safe drinking. This, he said, has resulted in severe shortages, leaving many communities in the area without reliable access to potable water — a crisis that underscores the urgency of finding lasting solutions.

Against this backdrop, he reminded the NDC of its own campaign pledge to ban small-scale mining within 120 days of assuming office, contrasting it with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s swift enforcement of a ban in just three months back in 2017.

“NDC promised a ban on small-scale mining in 120 days — yet Akufo-Addo did it in just 3 months back in 2017. Felix Ofosu Kwakye, here’s your evidence,” Mr. Aboagye declared, in direct reference to the Minister of Goverment’s Communications, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

He further argued that the NDC’s renewed promises lacked credibility, as the party was now rehashing measures it once strongly criticized. “The NDC must show new alternatives in the fight against galamsey, not recycle old methods they once criticized. They gave six clear promises, and already one timeline has expired,” he stressed.

Mr. Aboagye maintained that the Akufo-Addo government had shown unmatched resolve in addressing galamsey through bold interventions aimed at protecting rivers, safeguarding lands, and ensuring sustainable livelihoods for affected communities. He insisted that the NPP’s record stands taller, pointing to decisive actions and policy measures that go beyond rhetoric.

His remarks come at a time when national concern over illegal mining has intensified. The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, only last week, appealed to government to declare a state of emergency in mining-affected areas, warning that continued destruction of water bodies and forest reserves could have dire consequences for the country.
