The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced a new producer price for cocoa for the 2025/2026 crop season. The announcement, which followed a meeting by the Producer Price Review Committee (PPRC), revealed that cocoa farmers will now receive GHS3,228.75 per bag of 64kg gross weight.
This represents an increase from the 2024 price of GHS3,100 per bag. According to the Finance Minister, the new price aligns with government’s commitment to pay farmers 70% of the gross Free-On-Board (FOB) value, which has been pegged at US$7,200 per tonne. The corresponding producer price is set at US$5,040 per tonne, reflecting a 62.58% increase in US dollar terms from the previous price of US$3,100 per tonne.
Hon. Forson highlighted that this move is in line with President John Mahama’s pledge to ensure cocoa farmers receive a fair share of international market prices, fulfilling the promise of paying them 70% of the FOB value. The calculation was based on outstanding cocoa contracts and projected world market prices, with an exchange rate of GHS10.25 to the US dollar.
The minister noted that for the 2024/25 cocoa season, the previous administration had set the FOB value at US$4,850 per tonne and paid farmers US$3,100, representing 63.9% of the FOB value. The current adjustment, according to Hon. Forson, is a significant policy shift aimed at improving farmers’ livelihoods.
The new cocoa producer price takes effect from Thursday, 7th August 2025.
