KMA cracks down on drivers overcharging passengers

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has impounded 22 commercial vehicles and fined their drivers for charging unapproved fares, defying a recent directive on fare reductions.

According to Mr. Randy Wilson, Head of Urban Transport at KMA, the drivers were arrested during a special operation by the KMA Transport Task Force. Each offender faces fines between GH¢500 and GH¢1,500 before their vehicles are released, based on the Assembly’s approved penalty guidelines from July 2023.

The crackdown follows a mandated 15% reduction in transport fares effective May 24, 2025, as directed by national transport unions. KMA had earlier warned drivers, in a public notice issued on May 26, to comply or face legal action.

Mr. Wilson emphasized KMA’s commitment to enforcing discipline in the city’s transport system, stating that the Assembly will not tolerate violations and will act to protect passengers’ rights.

KMA assures the public it will continue efforts to ensure order and accountability on Kumasi’s roads.
