Kumasi, Ghana – By: Evans Osei-Bonsu
The Metropolitan Chief Executive of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, also known as King Zuba, has delivered his maiden sessional address with a bold declaration to restore Kumasi’s stature as a thriving, orderly and modern city.
Addressing the 1st Ordinary Meeting of the 2nd Session of the 9th Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly at the Prempeh Assembly Hall on July 17, 2025, the Mayor outlined an ambitious plan anchored on urban renewal, sanitation reform, financial efficiency, citizen engagement, and social infrastructure.
Hon. Boadi pledged to reposition Kumasi as “a beacon of cultural pride, urban discipline, and economic vitality.” He expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama and Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for their confidence in him, stating that his appointment is “not merely a personal honour, but a collective trust and responsibility.”
Tackling the city’s longstanding congestion and sanitation problems, the Mayor highlighted interventions already underway. “Since assuming office, deliberate steps have been taken to ease congestion in the Central Business District,” he said, revealing that unauthorized structures had been cleared and over 114 commercial vehicles impounded for non-compliance with approved fare reductions.
On sanitation, the Mayor noted that night sweeping operations had been overhauled for efficiency. “We undertook a restructuring exercise and re-engaged a committed team of 102 sweepers… Performance levels have since improved significantly,” he stated.
He also proposed a new fire safety regulation, urging Assembly Members to approve a bye-law that would require all CBD shop owners to install smoke detectors. “This requirement should serve as a precondition to allow for trading,” he emphasized.
Touching on the Assembly’s finances, Hon. Boadi praised the strong revenue performance in 2025. “The Assembly as at June 2025 generated GH¢20.3 million in Internally Generated Funds, and GH¢23.2 million in grants—totalling GH¢43.6 million,” he disclosed, attributing the growth to improved monitoring and compliance.
As part of his drive for transparency and citizen inclusion, he announced plans to digitize public engagement. “My goal is clear: to establish a responsive, tech-driven, and citizen-focused public relations system that builds trust and reflects the pride we all share in Kumasi’s transformation journey,” he said.
On social investment, the Mayor pledged to expand the KMA Clinic with new pediatric and gender-specific wards and confirmed that three major school infrastructure projects had been secured under GETFund.
Ending his address with a rousing appeal, the Mayor called on all stakeholders to rally behind his agenda. “Let us rise above partisanship, bureaucracy, and indifference, and commit fully to the task of building a safer, cleaner, and more prosperous Kumasi for generations to come.”
