NLA to introduce 5,000 new ‘Point-of-Sale Terminals’ to boost revenue

By: Evans Osei-Bonsu – The National Lottery Authority (NLA) is set to roll out 5,000 new point-of-sale (POS) terminals across the country in partnership with Fidelity Bank as part of efforts to enhance sales operations, increase revenue, and curb the activities of illegal lottery operators.

The Director-General of the NLA, Mr. Mohammed Abdul-Salam, made this known when he appeared before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament to respond to questions on the Authority’s sales and distribution performance.

According to Mr. Abdul-Salam, the deployment of the new machines forms part of a broader strategy to modernize NLA’s operations and replace obsolete equipment that has hampered efficiency in recent years.

“Currently, we have some equipment marked as obsolete, so we plan to replace it with new point-of-sale machines. We have an arrangement with Fidelity Bank to deploy around 5,000 new point-of-sale terminals to enhance sales and revenue. We believe that in the coming year this will significantly improve our operations,” he said.

He explained that the Authority is also working closely with the Attorney General’s Department and the Coalition of Concerned Lotto Agents and Writers Association of Ghana (CLAAG) to clamp down on illegal lottery activities that continue to drain state revenue.

“The structure of the Private Lotto Operators currently makes it difficult for us to control illegal lotto operators because some were engaged in unlawful activities even before registering,” he noted. “We are now consulting the Attorney General for clarification to ensure that all writers registered under the Private Lotto Operators receive a sticker. Once this is done, enforcement agencies can scan the sticker to verify legitimacy, making it easier to distinguish licensed operators from illegal ones.”

Mr. Abdul-Salam further revealed that the Authority has identified several areas across the country where NLA’s presence is limited, creating fertile ground for unlicensed operators to thrive. He expressed confidence that the new terminals, combined with stricter regulatory enforcement, would expand the Authority’s reach while ensuring fairness and compliance in the lottery space.

The NLA expects to roll out the new POS terminals and its accompanying enforcement regime in the coming year as part of a comprehensive effort to modernize its operations, improve service delivery, and boost state revenue.
