General Manager of MTN’s Northern Business District, Nii Adotey Mingle, has stated that no one can be defrauded on Mobile Money (MoMo) unless they willingly release their PIN code.
Speaking at MTN’s Media Forum in Kumasi at the Lancaster Hotel, he said, “Nobody can defraud you without releasing your pin number or code.”
He urged customers to treat their MoMo PINs with the same confidentiality as bank PINs and cautioned that MTN will never call customers to request MoMo PINs or One-Time Passwords (OTPs). Any such request, he emphasized, should be treated as fraudulent.
On the issue of SIM card pricing, officials of MTN clarified that the official cost of an MTN SIM card is GHC10. He advised consumers not to pay more than the approved price and to report vendors who attempt to charge extra to the police.
“Do not aid them to do the wrong thing only to come to report. Don’t pay. Challenge the person and take steps to report them to the police,” he said.
His remarks echo MTN Ghana’s consistent position that MoMo fraud is often linked to customer negligence rather than system breaches.
Investigations into previous incidents have confirmed that fraudsters succeed mostly by convincing victims to disclose sensitive information.
Despite continuous education, MoMo fraud remains a challenge, though measures such as the introduction of the Ghana Card for SIM registration have contributed to reducing fraudulent activities.
