UK Scholarship Arrears: Gov’t releases first quarter funds to ease student burden

By: Evans Osei-Bonsu

The Government of Ghana, through the Ghana Scholarships Authority, has released first quarter allocations to the Ghana High Commission in the United Kingdom to begin settling outstanding scholarship arrears owed to Ghanaian beneficiaries studying in UK institutions.

The disbursement is aimed at addressing prolonged delays in the payment of stipends and tuition fees, which have placed significant financial strain on affected students and, in some cases, disrupted their academic activities.

In a statement issued by the Scholarships Authority signed by its Director-General, Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, the Authority acknowledged the challenges faced by students and expressed regret over the delays, noting that steps are being taken to ensure a more efficient and timely disbursement process going forward.

“The Ghana Scholarship Authority is deeply mindful of the difficulties occasioned by the delays in the release of funds and wishes to assure all affected students that their welfare remains a priority. These payments represent a firm commitment to resolving the outstanding obligations and restoring normalcy to their academic pursuits.”

According to the statement, the funds released to the Ghana Mission will undergo the necessary administrative and procedural processes in line with regulatory requirements before being credited to the accounts of the beneficiaries within a short period.

The development comes amid growing concerns among some Ghanaian students in the United Kingdom, with reports suggesting that a section had considered embarking on demonstrations over unpaid stipends and tuition arrears.

However, the latest intervention by government is expected to ease tensions and restore confidence among the student body, many of whom have endured months of uncertainty.

The Authority further assured that Government remains committed to engaging all relevant stakeholders to prevent a recurrence of such delays, emphasizing its resolve to safeguard the academic welfare and well-being of Ghanaian students abroad.

For many of the affected students, the release of the funds brings a renewed sense of relief and optimism, as they look forward to continuing their studies without the burden of financial uncertainty.
