Former Member of Parliament for Odotobri, Emmanuel Gyamfi, has described Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a former Vice President of the Republic and a leading contender in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential race, as a gift to Ghana and the most suitable candidate to lead the country in 2029.
Speaking on Pure FM, the former MP expressed confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s leadership and electoral strength, arguing that based on experience and trend analysis, he remains the best option for the NPP. He maintained that there is no need for a change of candidate, noting that Dr. Bawumia’s chances of winning the next general election are stronger now than in previous contests.
According to him, Ghana’s political history shows that most leaders do not win on their first attempt, with Jerry John Rawlings being a rare exception. He pointed out that persistence often works to a candidate’s advantage, citing former President John Dramani Mahama, who lost several times before winning power in 2024. He believes this same dynamic will favour Dr. Bawumia.
Emmanuel Gyamfi emphasized that winning political power requires sacrifice, strategy, and unity, calling on the NPP to rally behind Dr. Bawumia with collective support, similar to the approach used by the NDC in the last elections.
On leadership qualities, he described Dr. Bawumia as calm, visionary, experienced, and a good listener, stressing that he possesses more governance experience than the other contenders. He highlighted major policy initiatives such as the Ghana Card and the interoperability system as evidence of Dr. Bawumia’s forward-thinking and results-oriented leadership.
He rejected claims that Dr. Bawumia was responsible for the NPP’s defeat in the last elections, attributing the loss instead to voter apathy and broader party dissatisfaction. Factors such as economic conditions, the refusal to change the Finance Minister amid public pressure, and certain public statements by former President Nana Akufo-Addo were cited as contributing to voter disengagement.
The former MP further noted that Dr. Bawumia ran an extensive campaign and maintained an issue-based approach without insults or offensive language. He dismissed arguments suggesting that Dr. Bawumia lacks popularity, describing them as inaccurate.
Looking ahead, Emmanuel Gyamfi projected a strong showing for Dr. Bawumia, estimating his chances at over 70 percent, while stressing that unity and strategic planning will be critical to electoral success.
