Politics of Division Unnecessary: Abu Jinapor Urges Unity, Endorses Bawumia

Talks suggesting that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is unqualified to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) simply because he is a Northerner are unnecessary and divisive. Ghana is one nation and one people. Leadership should be judged on competence, integrity, vision, and commitment, not ethnicity or region. The politics of division does not serve the interests of our democracy or our party.
Speaking on Pure FM, the Member of Parliament for the Damongo Constituency, Hon. Samuel Abu Jinapor, emphasized that the NPP is a product of unity. The party traces its roots to the United Party (UP) tradition, an amalgamation of political forces across Ghana, founded on shared values rather than regional identity. The very foundation of the NPP is unity, inclusiveness, and integrity in leadership.
Hon. Abu Jinapor was candid in admitting that the NPP is currently not as strong as it should be. Following the party’s loss in the last general elections, a committee chaired by Professor Mike Oquaye was set up to assess the causes of the defeat and make recommendations. One key takeaway from the committee’s work was the need to take strategic decisions to rebuild and reposition the party for victory.
In this regard, choosing the right leader is critical. Looking at the current political landscape, Dr. Bawumia stands out as the best candidate to lead the NPP back to power. He enjoys broad popularity across the country, which is a significant advantage. History shows that many leaders who eventually became president did not succeed on their first attempt; persistence and continuity often pay off. Re-presenting a candidate can therefore be a strategic strength.
Dr. Bawumia has contributed immensely to the growth and development of the NPP. He is visionary, articulate, hardworking, and deeply committed to national development. His policy ideas demonstrate a clear understanding of Ghana’s economic and social challenges, and he has consistently shown readiness to lead.
For these reasons, Hon. Abu Jinapor appealed particularly to delegates in the Ashanti Region, the stronghold of the NPP, to vote massively for Dr. Bawumia. A united party, guided by integrity and sound leadership, is essential if the NPP is to regain power and effectively serve the people of Ghana.
